Sometimes I see more in a photograph than what it’s giving me. I see additional textures and layers and lighting that I want brought out in a new way. I’ve begun “painting” some of my photos digitally…I call it “paintography”. I tried to paint and draw when I was young and it eluded me. This method lets me dive in with a canvas that graciously lets me work with it until it’s the “painting” for which I’m looking.
If I had all the canvases and paint in the world, I’d not be able to make my paintography photos. In fact, photography is the solution to a visual arts problem I’ve had my whole life…wanting to draw or paint, but being woefully unskilled. The ability to “paint” these digitally lets me try different techniques over and over again, without wasting a drop of paint or inch of canvas.
